Cambodia World Travel Inspiration

When is the best time to visit Angkor Wat?

I visited Siem Reap in Cambodia a few years ago, of course a visit to Angkor Wat was on my list. Initially, I was planning on visiting for sunrise as I had heard great things about. However, after a lengthy bus journey and crazy border crossing from Thailand the day before I opted for a lie in instead. Yes I know bad decision!!

The sunlight flooding in behind the main temple, casting a reflection into the water is stunning. I adore sunrise and reflection photos so to capture both in one shot is awesome. And all this captured on an iPhone!

Seeing this picture made me realise what I missed out on! Oh well, you have to save something for next time you visit.  I had a great day exploring the temples of Angkor Wat on a beautiful sunny day. So although I missed the sunrise I still have awesome memories of my experience.

And I climbed to one of the highest points to see the gorgeous sunset. Along with about 50+ Japanese tourists with huge cameras and tripods to take the best shot. That was an experience in itself!

Angkor Wat from shandi at Mini Me Wanderlust

visiting angkor wat at sunrise

During a recent trip to Cambodia, my son and I got up bright and early. Well, still dark and early, to go and see the sunrise at Angkor Wat.  This temple is the biggest and most famous in the area, for good reason. It was constructed to be the earthly home for the gods in Cambodian history, like the Mount Olympus of Southeast Asia.
Sometimes when you visit famous monuments around the world they can be a bit disappointing. Or at least different from how you had always pictured them. Not this time. Angkor Wat was just as majestic as I had always envisioned it.
Even my 3-year-old had a blast exploring all the different halls and structures.  The ornate architecture and vivid colors of the sunrise created, aside from this photo, a lasting memory of human achievement in Cambodian history. Absolutely beautiful.

This week’s photo comes from Shandi Barclay at Mini Me Wanderlust  and was taken using an iPhone.
